rejigging the budget

September 28th, 2018 at 05:50 am

So I have been going over our barefoot investor book (I love his advice) and looking at where we can save more money again...have been a bit off this year due to specialists (have a couple more to go) but we are wanting to buy a house in a couple years and we are looking at 15-20% deposit.

so I am going to look at butchers that have bulk buys in our area, we have a couple insurances that are coming up in nov so will look around and see if we can get a better deal from the one we are with or another one...looking at trying to save money on food as we spend a lot but we don't go over...still have some work to do and some research to see what else we can do, going to try make our own jam this year and still on track to grow, dry and/or freeze our vegies...WANT to bring our spending down and our savings up more...cutting back on christmas next year...not that we go overboard but think we can do better.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Yay for you on saving for the house deposit!

I don't know about your grocery stores, but ours tend to have a cycle on when they put things on sale. It is around every 8 weeks here for some of the things we purchase. I try to stock up and buy extra so I don't have to pay full price for these items so I have them on hand. We don't have a huge garden space, but DH has a small garden and I can tomatoes and freeze bell peppers to use during the winter and we eat a lot of produce including lettuce grown in pots and herbs when it is in season.

I look for ways to repurpose items. And I have been making quite a few things for myself. Instead of buying commercially made all purpose cleaner, I have been making my own with vinegar, Dawn dishwashing soap, and water. I make my own laundry detergent for so much less. I crochet my own covers for my Swiffer. And, I have made a lot of my presents for this upcoming Christmas. Some of it is jam and jellies and some is crocheted.

Thanks rob, I think ours is about every 6 weeks on most things (I don't think we have as many options/brands as you guys do) we do stock somethings but not a lot or we just don't use it...we have lots of big garden pots that we grow things in and its just coming spring here so time to get everything growing again...we dry and freeze a lot from our garden.

We also make our own laundry and cleaning products so it only costs us about $40 a year for that....food here is expensive but I know we can do better than what we do...but since hubby is the one that does all the shopping and cooking since I am unwell then I can't really complain to much. I am also not a crafty person I leave that for my hubby and daughter
