do you help with other peoples budgets

November 16th, 2019 at 04:44 am

Do you help with other peoples budgets? I have helped a few family members get their money back under control...most do okay..some do okay for a bit then when they start to get ahead they get off track again.

But I do my moms budget for her, I write up her budget, I pay her bills (she is almost 81 and has no idea with computers) she has a 14 yr old that lives with her (has since birth), she was getting into so much dire straits with her money and stressing herself out I told her I would get her back on track...it took us 18 months and she was doing great...now don't think is much of a spender as she isn't but things in her house got old and started not working so she had to replace it, a boy in school and all his activities and she is on a limited budget..she rarely ate out unless a special occassion...this year has been so much better for her, she has been able to buy a few things she has wanted and not needed...she asks my permission to buy things, as i have certain accounts for certain things..and I rarely say no..as she deserves it and doesnt really do much for herself...her bills are paid and she isn't stressing over them...she is much more relaxed and happy...now she is saving for the 2 of them to go over to the US next year to visit friends...Ii am so glad that we were able to take this journey with each other and she is so much better off...I pay all her bills online and I have a book I write receipts numbers in so hers are in the back so if anyone calls about a bill (some do a couple years later) we have the info...she is free and happy to live out her years stress free...or at least as stress as you can with a teen LOL...

I have taught our daughters the same thing, we were never really taught about money, so it was trial and error for us...but we do okay now...I just hope that the smarter people get about money and the more they teach each other about it maybe the world would be a much better place with less debt...hers hoping

I usually respond to Facebook posts when someone post their budgets, providing recommendations. I’ve noticed over time that I’ve gotten really good at creating a budget, and staying within my budget.

I’ve tried helping SO but he tends to get overwhelmed, and I’m not using a spread sheet.

Will you be teaching the kid who lives with your mom about saving and budgeting?

I tried helping my sister, but she did not pay attention -- I think she wanted me to wave a magic wand. I sometimes make suggestions to others when they ask me how I do it, but they usually do not take my suggestions. People don't want to change, really, they just want their problems to melt away.

I tried helping my stepdaughter, who was an adult at the time and so should have been able to do it on her own. She did not live with DH and me growing up and that may be part of the problem. She did not seem to think budgeting was worth it and was a waste of time. She is on public assistance and seems quite happy to be there. Oh well, it has helped us to pay off significant debt and accumulate savings.

Amber I'm not sure if my mom will or not...right now hes not interested he likes expensive things so I told him if he wants them get a job and pay for them himself...so we will see

CB I have done the same with people who have asked for my help..now I say no if I don't think they will stick to it..it takes hours to figure out...so won't waste my time

crazyliblady...some people just don't want to learn but if something happens and she has no savings then what is she going to do...if it was my kids I would say no...you tried to help and show her a better way...so she can get herself out of any messes that arise...its a learning curve...

I've offered to help people with budgets and suggestions, but I've discovered most want to basically complain, but not really do anything about it.

I offer advice from time to time if something comes up in conversation. I have a friend who is Chinese and lately has been talking a lot about wanting to "invest." Probably because she's heard somewhere that we've had a very good 10 years or so.

But she doesn't have a clue and has been talking to all sorts of high cost advisory firms. I've tried to talk to her about basics, and she kids that I will be her financial adviser, but I think her overall lack of knowledge will cause her to do nothing. I suggested a single Vanguard balanced fund to start, but I doubt she'll even do that.
