weird rentals

June 25th, 2020 at 01:03 am

So a little off topic here as it doesn't deal with finance but for the last 4 months (and yes we are still looking) I have been helping my mom look for a new rental...it has been frustrating as she is on a fixed income and the rents keep going up here...but the rentals have some weird things attached to them in the last week alone with the houses we have looked at it has stated the tenants of these houses can't use
heating/cooling
garage/shed
patio area
balcony

Seriously why would anyone rent a house that they can't use any of these things...I have not seen this before and find it becoming more popular...I know we will never rent a house like that but it seriously weird...I mean geez you can't even put photos up on the walls without permission here..but I think this is going a bit far!! what are others thoughts?? And yes this is in Australia

Very bizarre, have you inquired directly with the renter to make sure that there isn't an error in the listing? I had a friend who couldn't add new nail holes to the walls to hang pictures. She just had to use the ones left by the owner. I'm trying to remember if I suggested Command strip hooks...I know students in dorms use those.

That is pretty strange, but I once lived in a rental where I could not use the basement storage area because the landlord used it for storage. We accepted that limitation because we were in debt at the time and the location was ideal for cutting overall expenses. Could the limitations in your area have something to do with the COVID-19 epidemic?

CCF yes we do use those on our walls..we still need permission though and if any paint comes off we are responsible for repainting...but many fall off the wall after a few months

CLL yes I understand the shed/garage...my mom doesn't really have much to store...but its the rest of them its bizarre..sorry it freezing in winter but you can't use the heater...summers can be brutal here but you can't use the aircon...I have enquired and yes those are the restrictions on those properties so we just don't bother with them

Those restrictions seem bizarre and they will certainly limit anyone who is willing to rent. The command strips often do not work well if you live in higher humidity areas.

I'm not sure it is legal to prevent tenants from using the heating or air conditioning. It isn't in America. The balcony may not be stable, but the patio thing seems odd.

If a balcony is not stable, it should not be legal to rent it. But then again, it is in Australia. I have no idea what the landlord tenant rules are there.

they can put whatever restrictions on the houses they rent..it is very strict...but if things are broken or unsafe they need to have them fixed...I have just never seen it before the pandemic..but now it is is so many ads...it is really weird!! We will be steering clear of places like that

Is it because they’re offering to rent a portion of the home/apartment? I know a ton of people who rent their rooms out

That is crazy, but I guess since they can do that, they will. Not sure I'd want to rent a place like that.
