do you have a receipt book?

January 13th, 2020 at 01:09 am

I am one of those people that keep all receipts...you never know when someone is going to come calling and say that you owe money that you know you have paid...and this happened to us around 6 years ago...lucky for me I had the receipt to prove it and they backed off...however it took me so much time and energy to find the receipt and we had so many boxes of receipts...so I decided to get a book ledger (yes i am old school) and write them all down in the book, it has the date, bill, receipt number, how we paid and the amount we paid...it sits in the drawer with my budget and comes out each payday and filled out...I no longer hasve much paper except for that years bills (insurance/car rego etc) that we keep...and yes I keep it in a written book as computer can be hacked or mess up and you lose everything, it is a 5 min job when i pay bills and it gives me peace of mind....I also pay my moms bills from her account and do the same thing for her...she no longer has any hassles...she is in her 80's an people like to prey on the elderly and make them pay several times...they don't with her anymore...
So I am just wondering does anyone else keep a book like this?

I keep a file folder for each year with all physical medical receipts. I keep them for seven years and then shred. My other bills are all paid online so I get email receipts. I have those organized by years in different folders in my inbox. I also keep a spreadsheet of all bills paid, method of payment (check #, credit card, debit card, cash), date paid, etc, that I store on an external hard drive. I used to keep it all in notebooks, but they took up too much space after a while.

Nope. I shred receipts after 15 days, or about twice per month. Most payments we make are done with credit cards, or a check, where I could get a copy of the charge or check from the appropriate bank if needed. I do get the point. My husband worked for his younger sister for a time (in the 1990s) who insisted she had paid him $X, I had copies of all checks he received. Once she knew we had proof an couldn't provide her own that we had been paid differently, she backed off. It was also a lesson in not working with family! But again, we aren't doing business with anyone at this point that we would need any other proof of payment than what we already have.

I keep mine in boxes still.
I had a couple of times where it came in handy to deal with an issue. So many people UNTIL they are faced with some hassle they don't get it. there are many people i have known that ended up paying again or paying late fees etc based on they did not keep their receipt or proof of payment.

I keep my receipts. I put them in a box after I record the info on my spending spreadsheet, and at the end of the year I transfer them to a big baggie. So they are pretty much in order. I have had to find a receipt a time or two, so it's worth it to me to take these simple steps.

I keep mine. I have more than a year’s worth at this time & I need to dump them!

The only receipts I save are the ones for tax-related expenditures. I have a file for all tax stuff in my desk drawer and I use it each year when I sit down to prepare to file taxes. I was actually just doing that tonight.

We pay everything by either credit card, check, or online bill pay so there is always a way to obtain proof that a payment was made without having a physical receipt.
