help with irs phone number PLEASE??

June 3rd, 2023 at 02:19 am

I finally got a hold of the IRS as we had to do an amendment, we paid what they said we owed (once we figured it out properly) which was lower than what they said (before the amendment was put in), they said they have the amendment but haven't done it yet and that our outstanding balance has been given to collections, but to call them and as them to wait on everything until the amendment has been done...they gave me a number 367 941 1004...I call but it says it is a erong number...I have no idea how collections work...never owed people money like this...and now can't call them to get it sorted...have looked all over their page to see if I can find a number but to no avail...can anyone help me please...this is so frustrating,,,have told them it takes a minimum 8-16 weeks to get mail from them but they don't seem to care and we don't know anything until we can get a hold of them so if anyone can help that would be great...never had to deal with such an  incompetent company such as the IRS!!

They have been grossly understaffed for some time, but supposedly that is changing. I'm afraid you'll have to call them again and explain you were directed to call collections but given a wrong number. Best of luck, I know this is very frustrating.

I wish I could help, but I agree this will be another call on your part, unfortunately.

It sucks because they are hard to get through to especially living overseas...and expensive

I used google to find an IRS number for taxpayers outside the US.
    I found

You can contact us by phone if you need help with a tax account issue (we'll need your name and social security number to resolve any issues). You can use the following phone numbers:

800-829-1040 for individuals (Form 1040 filers)
    800-829-4933 for business callers
267-941-1000 for international callers or overseas taxpayers. (Overseas taxpayers may also fax a tax question to 681-247-3101 or use our international contact address page.)

Since the number is close to what you have I would try 267 941 1000, and also 267 941 1004.
Or if you have access to faxing, you could try faxing to ask for th correct number.

    Good luck.

    There is also this

    Living abroad?
International taxpayers will now contact TAS at +15.15.56.GO.TAS/+15.15.56.46.827. The line is programmed to automatically route the caller to Hawaii or Puerto Rico depending on the caller’s country of origin.

I’m glad the mystery has been solved with the wrong first digit. Also, hopefully calling the 800 number will be less expensive from AUS? If they help you at that number.
