Christmas cash or credit?

December 20th, 2025 at 07:30 am

I was out doing some shopping earlier this week and heard several conversations over the day about how many of them are in debt for christmas AGAIN!!

They were talking about what the lastest things that they bought their kids & grandkids, how much money they spent on them and got the kids whatever they wanted...a few of them...and I mean several of them said that they spend all year paying off their credit card just so they can pay it use it again for christmas....so wow all the interest they are paying each year on CC's just to spoil kids.

My daughter looked at me and said lucky we do christmas with cash and layaway (when they were younger), we have never used anything but cash for christmas. Even when we do things on the giving tree same thing, and donations to food banks and pet places. it all done with cash.

One thing I don't understand is over here we have a 6 month layaway so you have 6 months to pay it off and christmas comes but once a year and the date never changes so why don't people save for it? So my question is how do people do christmas here cash or CC's...just curious

Oh yeah layaway... I haven't heard of that term in a long time....

Yeah, I slowly save up throughout every year, and pay cash when the time comes. Honestly, it's so easy, even I can do it haha. Anything else is alien to me.

I only "buy" for my 3 (adult) nephews. The oldest nephew wanted a fancy cooler, so I did buy that for him. My middle nephew (oldest nephew's younger brother) wanted some books, most had already been bought by others, so I bought one and he will also get some cash. My youngest nephew always requests money. Oh, I also have to chip in cash to buy a gift for my boss. No biggie. That's my Christmas spending in a nutshell.

    We don't participate.
It's crazy to me how many people think that the Christmas debt cycle is mandatory. I mean, we don't borrow for anything. If we did participate, it would be with cash. None of it makes sense to me, on any level.

Recently one of the news stations said that many will be in debt again this Christmas and DH and I just shake our heads. We have all of our Christmas paid for; we bought some things earlier and paid them off when the credit card bill came, and then saved for the rest since we knew what we were going to do. We buy a gift card to a meat packing plant for each family and then give the grandkids a check, plus some smaller items for everyone. One of the things included in the family gift is jam, jelly, and pickles I've made as well as fudge.

It's interesting how many people do christmas differently...I know when I have grandkids (hopefully 2026) I will put money into an account for them and give them a small gift but do experiences all year for them once a month...they would remember that more and we did the same with our girls.
