How long does the IRS take?

March 12th, 2026 at 02:06 pm

Every year we have issues with the IRS seriously thinking of never doing taxes there again...they received our taxes 7 weeks ago and we know this because they have to sign for them, we can't do them online and we can't have an online account (because we dont have US address) and yet they aren't even acknowlee dging that they have them yet... we can't call because it is way to expensive calling overseas on a cell phone and that is if you can get a hold of anyone. So how long do we have to wait or do we just not bother and hope they will eventually get to them...seriously the IRS is one of the worst govt agencies we have ever dealt with, this is the 7th year in a row that we have had issues with them and I'm really over it

Have you checked your status on the IRS portal online? It might at least tell you it is "in progress" or that a refund has been issued, if you are due one.

According to the IRS FAQs about international individual tax matters, you should be able to check your tax status 24 hours after filing online or 4 weeks after filing a paper return.

I filed, using an online provider, on 02/22/2026 and I got my refund from the IRS
on 03/04/2026. It was direct deposited. I got my state refund on 03/10/2026.

Was this a paper-filed or an electronically filed return? That makes a big difference. Returns that are filed by paper usually see refunds in 3 weeks or less, while those that are filed by paper typically take at least 6-8 weeks, and could be longer. The current administration has both significantly cut the staffing and the expertise of those who are working in the agency (by incentivizing those with the most seniority (most expensive but most knowledgable employees to retire), while also signficantly increasing their work load by passing a major tax bill in 2025 which required a lot of the agency's time and attention.
